I live in a suburb of Baton Rouge and there are so many survivors of Katrina in and around our city from everywhere. I'm sure that you've seen the faces of our proud citizens on the news but to see them in person, in shelters, is something that lives with you forever, especially the children and the elderly. Different organizations and individuals are providing more than we could have ever hoped for and we are eternally grateful that everyone has extended their prayers, hearts and arms to our families in need. But I am trying to get word out to all of the thousands of authors that I love so much and whose books have helped me escape from some very trying times in my life, that the children in these shelters, both Red Cross, church-led, etc., need so much to occupy them. If you and your fellow authors could get the word out that children's books, coloring books, stuffed animals, toys, etc. are very much needed, for children of all ages. I have brought as many as I could gather as well as my historical romances that I had (for the moms) and I have urged all of my reader friends to do the same. The Red Cross workers have told me that these things seem to be "familiars" with children but also occupy them enough at times to give their weary parents a break for a few moments. I thank you again for the kind words and reading your comments, I could smell New Orleans as it was two weeks ago, I could hear the Jazz musicians and street performers in my head and see all of the characters and wonderfully kind people that make up 'Nawlins and I know that it will come back bigger and better than ever.
